A precious astronomical complication is at the heart of the Special Edition Luminor 1950 Equation of Time 8 Days Acciaio based on the so-called equation of time. The limited edition consists of only 100 copies. The deviation between the time according to the clock and the actual solar time is displayed. A small second display and date display including the complete month complete the timekeeping. The drive is a PANERAI manual-winding calibre which is manufactured in house, which provides all the benefits of the P.2002.
The earth orbits the sun in an elliptical orbit; the Earth's axis is at an angle rather than a vertical position. Because of these irregularities, the solar time only corresponds to the valid 24-hour arrangement for very few days per year. Instead, there are deviations in both directions up to a maximum of about 15 minutes. This value can be read accurately on the dial of the PAM 601.
For about 200 years, the phenomenon of fluctuating solar time has been employed in watchmaking. Being able to show the equation of time on the dial greatly simplifies the approximation of the true solar based on the mean time. The OFFICINE PANERAI watch manufacturer uses this complication in its usual minimalist way. Based on a linear display at the 6-o’clock position, the changing equation of time can be determined immediately.
The complication of the equation of time highlights the special character of the Luminor of 1950. The historically influenced watch model fuses together continuous developments from the history of manufacturing. Striking features include a black sandwich dial and a satin device for protecting the crown on the PAM 601, which was used for the first time in 1950. In addition, the 47mm corrosion-resistant stainless-steel housing shares the elegant lines of its legendary predecessor. In order to emphasize the original design, the notches on the dial of the PAM 601 are backed by the luminous substance Super-LumiNova in a shade that is reminiscent of the few remaining copies. An elegant bracelet in antique brown alligator-leather with contrast stitching is mounted on this model.
A special circuit of the three spring barrels allows the mechanical calibre P.2002 to achieve an unusually long power reserve of eight days. Since the movement is wound by hand, the power reserve indicator is very useful. This is a curved scale in keeping with the minimalist dial design on the back of the movement, which is easy to read through a sapphire crystal caseback. In the exclusive variant of the P.2002/E a month display in a circular form supplements the date at the 3 o’clock position. Both allow the correct setting of the date and time equation. The balance of this calibre oscillates at 4 Hz.
